Apollon Temple

The temple was built at the end of the 8th century BC, which was 10.20 meters wide, 24 meters long and slightly narrowed towards the east and according to the foundations of secos (sacred courtyard) walls uncovered in the north and south parts. The simple and small temple contained a cult statue, an altar, a sacred source and the symbols of Apollo. Remains of a columned building which is 15.50 meters long and 3.60 meters wide, revealed by exploratory digging carried out to the south-west of the temple.

The inner facades of the walls of the sacred courtyard were fortified by pilasters in the form of half columns, which brought colour to the long, high walls. The height of the walls of the 50.25 meter long and 17.45 meter wide secos (sacred courtyard) reached 17.5 meters. The greatness of the distances between the pilasters on the walls destroys the theory of the secos was roofed.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale is a naturally occurring landmark and tourist attraction in South Western Turkey. In English, the name translates to 'Cotton Castle' which is depictive of its fluffy, white, fairy tale-like appearance. An oasis of white amidst the brown mountain landscape, Pamukkale is made up of breathtaking white stalactites and icy-looking water-filled plateaus. The site is an official World Heritage Site because of its uniqueness and value of natural importance.

Pamukkale is located near the Menderes river basin, a site of tectonic plate activity that causes frequent earthquakes and geothermal hot springs. The water in these hot springs is very rich in minerals, particularly chalk and limestone, giving these formations their white colour. As the water seeps out and hardens coming down the mountain, the result is this appearance of white frozen waterfalls and large water-filled potholes.

The water in these natural hot springs, used as a spa since the 2nd century, B.C., is rich in minerals and is known for its many benefits to the skin and eyes. These barefoot soaking pools are an ideal spot for relaxing and enjoying the view of the remains of the ancient city, Hierapolis, which sits atop the mountain, and is also a World Heritage Site. Today, you can swim amidst the ancient remains of Hierapolis in the 'sacred pool' located inside the Pamukkale Hotel.

The city of Denizli, in the hills across the valley, also offers amazing views of Pamukkale. A must-see if you find yourself passing through this region, Pamukkale is sure not to disappoint.
